SCHOTSCHE KLOOF PRIMARY SCHOOL

Nestled in the historic Bo Kaap district, this forest has found its home at Schotsche Kloof Primary School. It has turned an abandoned, neglected plot into a thriving sanctuary for biodiversity in this Cape Town neighborhood.

The forest offers valuable educational and pastoral benefits to the school community. Both students and teachers can witness the process of rewilding firsthand, finding joy in having their very own forest just steps away from their classrooms.

The forest supplements the studies of pupils at a formative time in their educational lives. The aim is to cultivate a deep connection, appreciation and enthusiasm to Nature amongst these children, which they can take out into the world in the future.

Each week, a different class gets the chance to water our forest. We’re so proud of it, and the kids are always excited when it’s their turn. The forest is still young, but both the principal and teachers can’t wait for the cooling shade it will bring as it continues to grow.

“We are excited about rewilding an unused and degraded plot on the slopes of Signal Hill. It will be the first urban forest in the city of Cape Town.”— Aghmad Gamieldin, Founder of Mzanzi Organics
